Complete migration from Gmail

From custom domain setup through forwarding, OAuth removal, and retiring your old address.

2–4 weeks For: Anyone using email as their primary identity
  1. Get a custom domain

Register a domain at Porkbun, Cloudflare Registrar, or similar (~$10–15/year). This makes future provider changes possible.

💡 firstname-lastname.com or a memorable nickname.net—short and easy to remember.

  2. Configure a new email provider

Set up domain mail on Proton Mail Plus or Fastmail. Add MX, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records in DNS.

  3. Migrate mail via IMAP

Configure both accounts in Thunderbird. Export all Gmail via ImportExportTools NG → import to the new account.

  4. Run a forwarding period

Forward Gmail to the new address (at least one month). Update registered emails on important services. Do banks and government last.

  5. Revoke Google OAuth links

At myaccount.google.com/connections, review third-party access. Switch each service to new email + Bitwarden auth, then disconnect Google.
